Welcome to Founders Walk
Founders Walk is a long‑envisioned riverwalk and park improvement project located in the heart of downtown Milford along the Wepawaug River. Designed to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, and enjoyment of this important public space, Founders Walk connects the library, marina, harbor, and downtown amenities into a safer and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
A Vision Years in the Making
The idea for Founders Walk dates back more than two decades.
- 1999 – Architect Alan Plattus first proposed the concept of a riverwalk in downtown Milford.
- The concept was incorporated into Milford’s Plan of Conservation and Development for over 20 years.
- 2014 – Phase One of Founders Walk was completed using state bonding funds.
- June 6, 2022 – Milford’s Board of Aldermen unanimously approved moving forward with Phase Two.
- August 1, 2022 – A Founders Walk Steering Committee was formed.
- 2022–2024 – The Steering Committee held eight meetings, including two public feedback sessions at the Milford Library.
Throughout its history, Founders Walk has been shaped by public input, professional planning, and a shared goal of improving safety and usability in a heavily traveled public area.
A Focus on Safety
Safety has always been the driving force behind Founders Walk. According to the 2012 Plan of Conservation and Development, the area was described as “haphazard, confusing, and potentially unsafe.” Between 2020 and 2025, multiple accidents were reported, and library staff regularly received safety complaints.
Key safety concerns included:
- Pedestrians being forced into roadways near the Hotchkiss Foot Bridge
- Dangerous blind spots for drivers and walkers
- Conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians, and parked cars
Founders Walk directly addresses these challenges through thoughtful redesign and modern safety standards.
